That moment defined Crab Juice as one of The Simpsons' most memorable food jokes. The good news: crab-flavored beverages actually exist in various cuisines. You can make one at home.

For the fans who’d pick crab juice over Mountain Dew every time — we put it on a Crab Juice tee.

Method

Make the Broth:

Combine crab shells, water, celery, onion, bay leaves, peppercorns, and salt in a large pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

Cook for 30 minutes. The liquid should take on a slight seafood flavor and pale color. Don't cook longer or it becomes bitter.

Strain through a fine mesh strainer. Discard solids. Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold.

Quick Version:

If you don't have crab shells, use bottled clam juice as a base. Add a pinch of crab boil seasoning (Old Bay works). Chill thoroughly.

This isn't as authentic but achieves similar results with less effort.

Serve:

Pour cold crab broth over ice in a tall glass. Add a squeeze of lemon. Garnish with a celery stalk.

For extra authenticity, serve it from a cart with questionable hygiene standards.

Hot sauce is optional but recommended. The spice cuts through the briny flavor.

Does It Actually Taste Good?

Honestly? It's an acquired taste.

Crab juice tastes like light, cold seafood broth with a mineral quality. Similar to clam juice or light fish stock. Some people enjoy it. Others find it challenging.

The key is serving it very cold with plenty of lemon. Warm crab juice is unpleasant. Cold crab juice is... acceptable.

Think of it as a savory beverage. Like drinking chilled consommé. Unusual but not offensive.

Variations

The Bloody Crab: Mix crab juice with tomato juice, hot sauce, and vodka. Essentially a Bloody Mary with seafood undertones.

Asian Style: Add a splash of fish sauce and lime juice. Serve as a cold soup appetizer.

The Michelada Crab: Mix with beer, lime, and hot sauce. A seafood michelada variation.

Warm Service: Heat the broth and serve in a mug. More palatable for some, less authentic to the episode.

The Episode

Crab Juice appears in "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson" (Season 9, Episode 1). Homer is stranded in Manhattan waiting for a parking boot to be removed from his car, parked at the World Trade Center.

A street vendor sells only Khav Kalash (a mysterious meat product) and Crab Juice. When Homer asks for a drink, the vendor gestures to Mountain Dew and Crab Juice. Homer's reaction to Mountain Dew is pure disgust. He chooses Crab Juice.

The joke works because Mountain Dew is a normal beverage that Homer inexplicably finds more offensive than juice made from crabs. It's absurdist comedy at its finest.

Later, Homer desperately needs a bathroom after drinking too much Crab Juice. The subplot continues.

Pairing

Crab Juice belongs with Khav Kalash. The show presents them as a complete meal, and the flavors theoretically complement each other.

If you're doing a full Simpsons New York experience, make both. Serve them together. Experience what Homer experienced, minus the parking boot.

The Complete NYC Experience: Pair with Khav Kalash for the authentic street vendor combo from this classic episode.
